NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy

The NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy becomes effective for applications submitted on or after January 25, 2023.  The policy applies to all NIH supported research that results in the generation of scientific data. It does not apply to other activities such as training, infrastructure development, and non-research activities.

The Data Management and Sharing Plan (DMSP) must be submitted as part of the proposal package.  While alternate formats will be accepted, the NIH has released a draft DMSP template that serves as a useful guide.  It is important to note, particularly for large data sets, that the costs associated with data management and sharing may be allowable as direct costs to the grant.

The Perelman School of Medicine has developed an excellent guide to help PIs create a robust and detailed data management and sharing plan. Additionally, Penn Libraries has a comprehensive guide to help support the new requirements, including tools and other resources to aid in the creation of, and compliance with, DMSPs.
